Lola in Los Angeles

Lola in Los Angeles | www.loladodge.com

It’s still Monday (in my timezone) and I’m sneaking in a blog before I turn into a pumpkin. Today, I’m coming at you from the rolling hills of Los Angeles, where I’ll be hanging up my passport for a year or so.

1. Los Angeles

I’m so excited I get to stay in LA! The food is crazy delicious, I can get involved in any class/activity imaginable, and I have so many new cafes to explore. It’s such a cool city, I have zero worries about getting bored… But I am kind of apprehensive about this whole parallel parking thing. I remember the last time I parallel parked (Five-ish years ago in Pittsburgh?) and gave my passengers a solid twenty minutes of laughter. But that was before I had a back-up camera, so maybe now it will be okay??? (crossing fingers)

2. Wait But Hi

I ventured out into society over the weekend (THE SHOCK) because I got chosen to join one of the Wait But Why meetups taking place in LA. Unfortunately, Tim Urban did not show up in person (so I couldn’t propose marriage yet), but I met 15 super interesting people and we shared a lot of wine and great conversation. Writers, directors, film editors, divers, MBAs, actors, musicians–such an awesome and eclectic group!

3. Tessa Dare

Melissa at LilyElement got me started on Tessa Dare, and Tessa is yet another reason I’m excited about LA–she’s giving a talk at the local RWA chapter next weekend. How lucky am I?? Her Spindle Cove novella Beauty and the Blacksmith is free for a few more days, so check it out if you’ve never read her before. Her stories are always cute and hilarious with satisfying HEAs. They make me feel so cozy and happy!

4. No Man’s Sky

These are the times I’m bummed to be a Mac owner. The reviews are coming out for No Man’s Sky and people are saying it has a boring resource gathering aspect, but I’m sitting over here like I LOVE BORING RESOURCE MANAGEMENT GAMES AND I WANT TO NAME PLANTS. Since I can’t just pop out and buy a gaming PC, I’m killing time until the Mac port release by watching playthroughs on YouTube. I highly recommend Shirley Curry’s gaming channel. She’s a grandma who her subscribers as “grandkids.” It’s TOO CUTE. “Oh no!” Shirely gasps. “That’s too far away. Oh no! I can’t go there. How far away is the planet?”

5. Book Finished!

Maybe I should’ve led with this, but QUANTA RESET IS FINISHED!!!

The file is on its way to be converted for Netgalley. YESSSSS!

I’m so excited to be done. It kind of came down to the wire with this deadline (it always seems to…) but I’m happy to share the story with you all and I hope you love it!

The Quanta Reset Blog Tour runs September 20th-27th, 2016, hosted by YA Bound

Happy Monday!

Jinn and Juice Digital Release Day!

Happy digital release day to Nicole Peeler and her new Orbit novel, Jinn and Juice! I’m a big Peeler fan and have been waiting and waiting for this jinni Urban Fantasy, which is set in Pittsburgh of all places. I used to live there kinda (except more in the boonies, but close enough to know about yinz and Primanti Brothers) and the steel city sounds like an amazing fantasy setting.

Physical copies will be out in April, but don’t wait! You can download the book NOW at Amazon, B&N, or iTunes.

Jinn and Juice by Nicole Peeler
Cursed to be a jinni for a thousand years, Leila nears the end of her servitude—only to be bound once again against her will. Will she risk all to be human?

Born in ancient Persia, Leila turned to her house Jinni, Kouros, for help escaping an arranged marriage. Kouros did make it impossible for her to marry—by cursing Leila to live a thousand years as a Jinni herself.

If she can remain unBound, Leila’s curse will soon be over. But Ozan Sawyer, a Magi with the ability to See, Call, and Bind jinn has other plans.
Oz needs Leila to help him penetrate Pittsburgh’s steel-soaked magic, a juice potent but poisonous to supernatural creatures, in order to find a missing girl with her own mysterious connection to Kouros. Unfortunately for Leila, becoming Bound to Oz may risk more than just her chance to be human once more—it could risk her very soul…

Jinn and Juice is the first in a new series by fantasy writer, Nicole Peeler, set in a world of immortal curses, powerful jinni and belly dancing.

The Clockwork Dagger is Out!

The Clockwork Dagger is out!! I’ve been looking forward to this one for months, and have heard great things about the story. Who doesn’t love a strong steampunk heroine?! Most importantly, we all need to support Beth so she can keep baking amazing sweets for us on her food blog (Bready or Not). I’ve had nothing but respect for this author since she brought Cadbury Creme Egg brownies into my life!

Happy release day!

Full of magic, mystery, and romance, an enchanting steampunk fantasy debut in the bestselling vein of Trudi Canavan and Gail Carriger

Orphaned as a child, Octavia Leander was doomed to grow up on the streets until Miss Percival saved her and taught her to become a medician. Gifted with incredible powers, the young healer is about to embark on her first mission, visiting suffering cities in the far reaches of the war-scarred realm. But the airship on which she is traveling is plagued by a series of strange and disturbing occurrences, including murder, and Octavia herself is threatened.

Suddenly, she is caught up in a flurry of intrigue: the dashingly attractive steward may be one of the infamous Clockwork Daggers—the Queen’s spies and assassins—and her cabin-mate harbors disturbing secrets. But the danger is only beginning, for Octavia discovers that the deadly conspiracy aboard the airship may reach the crown itself.

Cursed Moon is Out!

Happy release day to Jaye Wells and Cursed Moon (Prospero’s War, #2)! I’ve been salivating to get my hands on this one and find out what kind of trouble mage/cop Kate Prospero can get herself into this time. The series reminds me of an early Anita Blake, with well-researched police procedural elements and plenty of magic as the street gangs in town cook up magic potions instead of hard drugs–although based on the side effects, I’d say the potions are worse for you! Urban fantasy readers, check this one out.

When a rare Blue Moon upsets the magical balance in the city, Detective Kate Prospero and her Magical Enforcement colleagues pitch in to help Babylon PD keep the peace. Between potions going haywire and everyone’s emotions running high, every cop in the city is on edge. But the moon’s impact is especially strong for Kate who’s wrestling with guilt over falling off the magic wagon.

After a rogue wizard steals dangerous potions from the local covens, Kate worries their suspect is building a dirty magic bomb. Her team must find the anarchist rogue before the covens catch him, and make sure they defuse the bomb before the Blue Moon deadline. Failure is never an option, but success will require Kate to come clean about her secrets.

Jinn and Juice–Cover Reveal!

I was so excited to wake up and see the cover for Nicole Peeler’s latest–Jinn and Juice! The concept sounds amazing, and I can’t wait to start reading. It’s not yet available for pre-order, but add it to your TBR on Goodreads!

Dirty Magic by Jaye Wells: Happy Book Release Day!

I’ve been looking forward to this one for ages, and I’m so psyched my pre-order will be popping up today! I was sold on the first pitch: The Wire, but with wizards. Jaye is super-talented, and I think it’s the coolest that we share not only the same agent (Yay, Rebecca!) but also the same MFA program. I feel more awesome by association.

Go check this one out, book friends!

Cover of Dirty Magic (Prospero's War #1) by Jaye Wells

The last thing patrol cop Kate Prospero expected to find on her nightly rounds was a werewolf covered in the blood of his latest victim. But then, she also didn’t expect that shooting him would land her in the crosshairs of a Magic Enforcement Agency task force, who wants to know why she killed their lead snitch.

The more Prospero learns about the dangerous new potion the MEA is investigating, the more she’s convinced that earning a spot on their task force is the career break she’s been wanting. But getting the assignment proves much easier than solving the case. Especially once the investigation reveals their lead suspect is the man she walked away from ten years earlier—on the same day she swore she’d never use dirty magic again.

Kate Prospero’s about to learn the hard way that crossing a wizard will always get you burned, and that when it comes to magic, you should be never say never.
